What is the Y7 Summit?
What is it?
The G7 (Group of 7) is a gathering of world leaders from seven of the most advanced nations. It meets annually to discuss solutions to the most pressing shared issues.
Each year, ahead of the Leaders' Summit, young leaders from each of the G7 states assemble to develop, negotiate, and propose policy recommendations on behalf of young people to present to Heads of State. This process is known as the Y7.
Why do it?
The purpose of the Y7 is to ensure that the decisions and agreements made by Ministers and Leaders of the G7 fully reflect the needs and views of young people.
It is a unique opportunity for the youth voice to be heard at the highest levels of international decision making.
When is it?
In 2021, the U.K. Government hosts the G7 Presidency. Ministerial meetings will take place from end of April through to early June. The G7 Leaders Summit 2021 will take place from 11 - 13 June in Carbis Bay, Cornwall.
In line with the U.K.’s Presidency, the Future Leaders Network hosts the Y7 Presidency. The Y7 Summit 2021 will take place in w/c 10 May 2021.
Opening the summit:
Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister
Policy priorities
The theme for the Y7 2021 is “Making Waves for Future Generations”.
The Youth 7 (Y7) will champion the voice of Future Generations to G7 Ministers and Leaders. Young people now, and in years to come, will bear the social and economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Y7 will call on G7 leaders to embed the needs of future generations in all national and international recovery plans, and to dramatically increase youth participation in democratic processes.
The Y7 will have four policy tracks. Delegates will work in these tracks to make recommendations which they will feed into the relevant Ministerial and Leaders discussions. We’ll update each tab with more information on policy development as it happens.
Meet the Y7 2021 delegates
Meet the young leaders representing each of the G7 nations at the Y7 2021.
For the first time in history, the Future Leaders Network has also created a Youth Forum, bringing young people with real-world, lived experience of each of the tracks. The Youth Forum members will support the track delegates with public consultation, policy development and advocacy.
