Main responsibilities:
Being a delegate - or a representative on the behalf of the U.K. - is a huge privilege and a huge responsibility. Your role is to champion the voice of U.K. and G7/G20 youth at the highest level of international decision making.
This year, in 2021, we are aiming to make the Y7&Y20 process an exemplar for youth participation in diplomacy and decision making. So now, more than ever, we need diverse, representative and passionate youth representatives at the Y7&Y20 Summit.
Each delegate will be responsible for one policy track.
The policy tracks for the Y7 2021 are:
Climate and the Environment;
Digital and Tech;
Economy; and
Health.

Your main responsibilities will be to:
Lead with passion, integrity and accountability. You will be excited to develop your personal leadership skills and enthusiastic about the learning opportunity this will be for you. You will be the Future Leader Network’s, and the United Kingdom’s, Ambassador to the world, and you will be committed to behaving professionally, ethically, respectfully and with integrity. You will take responsibility for your actions and be accountable for the quality and timeliness of your work and attendance.
Be a strong team player, working collaboratively and effectively with your peers in your delegation, and in the other U.K. delegation. You will enjoy working in a high performing team, taking responsibility for creating a positive team culture. You’ll be willing to muck in when the going is tough, to support your peers, and to have fun!
Carry out desk-based research into your policy track. You will need to evaluate existing quantitative and qualitative data on the main problems or issues in relation to your policy area. You will also need to investigate existing interventions or policy solutions, evaluating their effectiveness.
Lead the delivery of public consultations with young people from across the United Kingdom, to gather further evidence on the scale or nature of the issues relating to your policy track, and generate ideas for potential policy solutions to those issues. You will work closely with the Y7&Y20 Youth Forum, a group of 35 young people from across the U.K. who have lived experiences of the policy tracks, who will support you in reaching communities across the country and gathering data. You will work tirelessly to engage young people from a diverse range of backgrounds, reaching out to young people who otherwise may be ignored. You’ll deliver your consultations in a way which ensures all voices - including some of the most marginalised - are heard.
Develop pragmatic, innovative and proportionate policy recommendations on behalf of U.K. youth which aim to tackle the main problems or issues in your policy track. You’ll need to weigh up the evidence you have gathered from your desk-based research and your findings from public consultations. You will need to balance any competing priorities, come to reasoned conclusions, and understand financial, operational and political constraints in regards to what you’re recommending.
Negotiate with youth delegates from other G7&G20 states as to the final policy recommendations to be included in the Y7/Y20 communique. You will need to effectively influence and persuade your peers to adopt your preferred policy recommendations. You will need to draft a final communique of policy recommendations, and ensure the communique is as impactful as possible.
Engage regularly with senior Government officials to ensure Y7/Y20 activity is informed by the latest high-level political priorities, and to engage in dialogue with government representatives on youth recommendations. You’ll need to be able to build trust with senior stakeholders, and present the youth perspective in a credible and compelling way.
Advocate on behalf of the youth recommendations to Government, business, industry and wider civil society leaders. The Y7/Y20 doesn’t ‘end’ with the Summit - in fact, it only just begins. Once you have developed policy recommendations, you will need to work tirelessly with delivery partners to see the recommendations adopted and implemented in the U.K. and/or internationally.
Deliver meaningful change in your own community by taking personal responsibility for one policy recommendation (either in the communique or that you have developed personally) and delivering it. You will need to develop a personal workplan, with support from leading changemakers, and will be responsible for delivering it in the months after the Summit.

High degree of self-awareness, reflecting on personal goals, strengths and areas for development
Ability to take initiative and deliver real-world change, whether that is at a local, community, national or international level
Strong interpersonal skills, able to listen effectively, work with people from a wide range of backgrounds, and build trust and rapport.
Excellent communication skills, able to adapt your language and style to different audiences and deliver impactful written and verbal messages.
Outstanding team working skills, able to work effectively with diverse team members and achieve collective goals.
Excellent analytical skills, capable of understanding, analysing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative evidence.
Outstanding problem solving skills, able to balance competing perspectives and propose innovative, realistic solutions.
Desirable Criteria for all delegates:
Interest or experience in at least one of the policy tracks of the Y7/Y20
Interest in national/international affairs, and the U.K’s role in these
In addition, for delegates who are interested in securing the role of Head Delegate, we will be assessing you against these two additional Essential Criteria:
Strong leadership skills, able to set a clear vision for your team, coaching and guiding your team to success
Strong management skills, able to delegate tasks effectively, set deadlines and remove any obstacles

Time commitment
At least 5 hours a week. Successful candidates must be able to commit to:
Induction activity to be held on weekday evenings/weekends in February 2021
Regular meetings with other U.K. delegates from February - December 2021
Consultation activity with young people across the U.K. from March - May 2021
Monthly review sessions with the Future Leaders Network to report on progress
The Y7 Summit, expected to take place in May/June 2021. Delegates must be available for the full Summit - partial attendance is unacceptable. Y20 dates tbc.
Advocacy activity and the delivery of a Post-Summit Initiative from June - Dec 2021
The Future Leaders Network Annual Conference, expected in November 2021, to hand over the Y7 Presidency to the German Organising Committee.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to apply, candidates must:
Be aged 18 - 30 by the 31st December 2020;
Be a citizen of the United Kingdom and/or hold a valid UK passport.
Remuneration
Voluntary. All costs associated with the Y7 Summit (including travel, accommodation, catering if applicable - may be virtual due to Covid) will be covered by the Organising Committee. Travel costs of the Y20 will not be covered.
Term of Role
January 2021 - January 2022.
