Role Description - FLN network LeaDs
Opportunity
We have a massive opportunity opening up at FLN. We’re looking for two individuals to lead FLN’s local Networks in London and the South West of England respectively.
As Network leads, you’ll be responsible for creating a diverse, stimulating and enriching local network of changemakers in London or the South West of England.
Our Networks in Wales and Scotland are already thriving, bringing young people together for networking events, breakfast debates, keynote speakers, learning visits and conferences with government, industry and the public sector. We are also already well established in London or the South West of England, with many of our network already based here.
We now want to formalise our Networks in London and the South West of England. You’ll be responsible for bringing young leaders (aged 18-30) together to generate a sense of ‘belonging’ in being part of FLN, to spark meaningful connections, share their ideas and experiences, build leadership capability, come together for events, opportunities and to solve problems in their community.
Please see the full role descriptions below.
Title: London or South West of England Network Lead.
Salary: Voluntary - but we will reimburse all reasonable and pre-agreed expenses for anything that we require of you as part of the role.
Expected Commitment: 5 -7 hours per week on average.
Duration: Fixed Term – 12 months, with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to: Head of Network.
Location: London or South West of England - remote working.
Eligibility criteria: aged 18 - 30 in the duration of 2022, based in either the South West of England or London (this means you either work or live in one of these locations) and able to commit 5 - 7 hours a week.
Key responsibilities of the roles
1. Community building
You’ll help us reach the full extent of the vibrant, diverse young people who live and work in London or the South West of England, and ensure they have the opportunity to access our unique leadership offering. You’ll be responsible for working with the Head of Communications and Head of Network to develop localised marketing materials and growing our community, whether that’s through advertising, partnerships, or by attending events in your area on our behalf.
2. Programmatic Offering
We’re looking for someone to develop and deliver an exciting programme of local events and networking opportunities for our community. You’ll aim to deliver at least three events over the course of the year. This will include, where appropriate, leading a team of volunteers to help with logistics and social media, ensuring that events are accessible and evaluating their impact. You’ll also facilitate at least one opportunity for your engaged community to come together to solve a problem of their choice in your local area.
3. Stakeholder management
You’ll get to reach out to local organisations, meet them and look for ways that they can support our mission (either through funding, offering event space, opportunities for young people - e.g. diplomatic opportunities with the UN or the G7 - or benefits in kind), or other organisations who are keen to achieve a similar goal.
What will you get back?
In these voluntary roles, you’ll be supported by Anna Harris, our Head of Community, and the wider FLN Senior Leadership Team As with all of our FLN roles, a huge focus will be on your development and we will give you:
meaningful opportunities to gain practical leadership experience, have fun and affect change
opportunities to build your network and access unique and exclusive experiences and get involved in the wider work FLN delivers - ranging from the Y7, Y20 and COP, through to Ministerial and diplomatic meetings, engagements with local, national and international media and our leadership training - whatever takes your fancy.
A flexible role that fits in with any work or study obligations you may have, with a time commitment of 5 - 7 hours per week on average.
About Future Leaders Network
Future Leaders Network is a not-for-profit organisation aimed at discovering and developing the next generation of social, economic and political leaders in the United Kingdom.
Leadership (especially good leadership) matters - at an individual, societal and a global level. Yet there is no systemic, structured process to develop the leaders of tomorrow - and mechanisms that do exist are expensive, elitist and out-of-date.
Our vision is a world where leaders at all levels of society are effective, ethical and affect positive change.
We offer:
Contemporary, youth-centred and youth-relevant leadership training;
Unique, life-changing, capability-building opportunities; and
A diverse, stimulating and enriching network of changemakers, united by their desire to make a difference.
About the selection process
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview.
Throughout your application, we’ll be assessing you against the following essential criteria:
High degree of self-awareness, reflecting on personal goals, strengths and areas for development;
Passion for youth leadership - strong alignment with Future Leaders Network’s vision, mission and values;
Outstanding team leadership and interpersonal skills, able to listen effectively, work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, set collective goals and delegate tasks.
Proven experience or understanding of building communities - amongst youth or otherwise - that deliver real value;
Proven experience delivering in-person and online events;
Experience or understanding of how to bring together a group of people to solve a real life problem;
Strong organisational skills, able to balance competing deadlines.
