Here at the Future Leaders Network we are delighted to be hosting the Y7 Summit in 2021, in collaboration with the British Youth Council.
We want young people to be at the heart of our Summit, and that begins in the design process.
We are looking for a group of passionate, dedicated and diverse young people to help us design the Y7 2021 by participating in our Design Working Group.
As a member of the Working Group, you'll be responsible for consulting with a wide range of young people and stakeholders to put together a proposal for the Y7 2021 and presenting this to a senior panel for approval.
In 2021, the UK will host the G7 Presidency. The Future Leaders Network, in collaboration with the British Youth Council, will host the Y7. We are seeking young people from across the United Kingdom to take part in our Y7 Working Group to develop proposals for the design and intent of the 2021 summit.
What’s the G7?
The G7 (Group of 7) is an international forum bringing together the world’s seven largest advanced economies.
The members of the G7 are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
In advance of each summit, the member state hosting the Presidency selects three - five themes which the summit will focus on. These are typically issues of global importance, and where the G7 can make a real difference by setting global direction.
At the end of each summit, the Heads of State issue a ‘political declaration’ in which all seven member states commit to take forward certain actions in relation to each theme.
The G7 complements the role of the G20, which is widely regarded as the framework for ongoing global economic coordination.
What’s the Y7?
The Y7 is the official youth engagement group of the G7. Its aim is to bring together young leaders from each of the member states to ensure that the voice of young people (aged 18-30) is heard in the G7 process.
Each G7 member state selects a ‘delegation’ of 2 - 6 people to represent their country at the Y7.
In advance of each summit, all Y7 delegations are responsible for developing policy proposals that typically relate to the three - five themes selected by the G7 President. The Y7 delegations then attend a 3 - 7 day summit in the nation hosting the Presidency, where they negotiate with other member states as to which policy proposals they all agree upon.
At the end of the summit, the Y7 issue a set of policy proposals in a ‘communique’. These policy proposals are presented to the host Government and to the G7 Heads of State.
Similarly, the Y7 complements the Y20, which is also hosted every year in relation to the G20.
UK G7 Presidency 2021
The UK is hosting the G7 Presidency in 2021. The Future Leaders Network (FLN), in collaboration with the British Youth Council (BYC), is hosting the Y7 summit.
We want to develop the summit in the same way we deliver it - collaboratively, inclusively and innovatively.
We want the Working Group to be as diverse as possible and truly representative of the range of young voices in the country. We actively welcome applications from young people from across the United Kingdom and from a wide range of backgrounds. You'll be expected to commit at least 15 hours a month to the Working Group, and to have a real passion for empowering and engaging young people across the country in your work.
